Be assured, your animals will know something is going on,
probably as soon as you know you are moving for sure.

While you have a hundred and fifty things to consider,
don't leave your pets to their own devices.

They can be wickedly creative - believe me, I know.

Be sure to consider their needs, too, or you could regret it.

Preparing for and embarking on your trip:

If your pet is kennel-trained, bring the kennel as a safe place for your animal to stay.

Be sure you pack your pet's favorite toys. blanket or bedding, familiar bowls and usual food.

Get the veterninary records from your current vet to give to the new vet in your new home.

Get a health and/or rabies certificate from your vet and keep in where you can locate it easily, in case of a mishap on the road.

Make sure your pet has updated ID tags with the numbers of where you can be reached.

Take a photo or two of your pet so you will have a current picture in case your pet gets lost.

Try to arrange feeding about 5 hours before you travel, and give water up to 2 hours before you leave. Plan on regular potty stops and leg-stretching breaks. Always use a leash.

Pack food and water in the car.

When you arrive at your new home:

Keep your pets confined with regular walks - they won't know that the new location is going to be home for a while, so keep an eye on them. Walking the neighborhood is a great way to get to know your new neighbors!

If your pet is MICROCHIPPED, be sure and contact the service to update your information.

BEST IDEA OF ALL for a stress-free move-in for dog owners:

Consider DOGGIE DAYCARE or temporary boarding. You can concentrate on getting settled and your dog(s) can get the attention they crave. Bozeman/Belgrade area has two facilities I've heard good comments about (this is not an endorsement, simply information).
